Everyone gets afraid from time to time. For some of us though, certain fears and phobia's can dominate our thinking and control portions of our lives. Suffering with Claustrophobia can be very debilitating.
Your Claustrophobia may have arisen as the result of a traumatic experience, or slowly crept into your life over a period of time. It's even possible that the root cause or beginning of your Claustrophobia is unknown to you, but the reality of it is that it's present in your daily life. Whatever the reason, the symptoms of your Claustrophobia can seriously impact the quality of your life.
When we are faced with our biggest fears we experience tremendous
Anxiety and
Panic Attacks. Our breathing becomes more rapid as our pulse quickens and our muscles tense up. We may try to shut out whatever it is by closing our eyes, running away or by hiding. Avoidance though, is the way in which you might prefer to deal with the anxiety of your Claustrophobia.
Where Can my Phobia Come From?
Severe stress
A series of stressful or negative experiences
A fear of fear
Transmission from someone else (e.g. a parent or sibling)
Past trauma
The treatment for your Claustrophobia which you will receive at the Hertfordshire Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Clinic is very effective and permanent and will include one or more of the following:
Hypnotherapy You will be helped to understand what triggers the symptoms of your Claustrophobia with the very powerful therapeutic model of Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy for Claustrophobia helps to uncover underlying causes as to why something makes you fearful. Your phobia is not a medical condition, it cannot be treated effectively with medication. You have Claustrophobia because you have learned to do it. You haven't developed it on purpose, you didn't wake up one morning and decide to have Claustrophobia. A phobia is a learned response...A HABIT, a habit which has developed over time and a habit which is now a subconscious action. Just as any habit, you do not perform it on a conscious level so you are not aware of the emotions associated with it surfacing. Your Claustrophobia is buried in your subconscious mind and that is where we need to access to break your phobic habit. Hypnotherapy will break the habit of your Claustrophobia.
Hypnotherapy is one of the oldest therapies around and is validated by the British Medical Association,(BMA), as an orthodox treatment and not merely a complimentary practice. Unfortunately stage shows have given people misconceptions as to what hypnosis is. Some people think that they lose control of their faculties or that they are asleep. Some people think that they will be made to say things they do not want to say. All these misconceptions are far from what hypnosis is. During the hypnotherapy sessions your conscious mind is guided into a gentle state of relaxation and your subconscious mind is in a state of heightened awareness. That is why this form of therapy is so effective for Claustrophobia, because we are able to establish the root of the problem where it is burried...the subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy faq's.

Desensitisation therapy is recognised as an effective treatment for any phobia administered in the hypnotic state. Systematic desensitisation involves establishing a scale of fearful stimuli starting with the least fearful situation you have about your phobia, rising to the perceived most fearful. You will be taught how, while in the hypnotic state, to use relaxation techniques so that the fearful stimulus you bring to your mind will gradually disperse to experience a feeling not of fear…but of calm. When the least fearful situation is dealt with and you do not present with an emotional reaction to the thought you are then asked to bring to mind the next fearful stimulus in the scale to mind. With gradually more fearful scenarios presented to an agreed point on the scale creating new conditioned responses of calmness, confidence and relaxation as the hierarchy is worked through. Once the scale is worked through and the new conditioned responses adopted then you will feel free from the phobia which has been holding you back.
Hypnotherapy has other beneficial applications in the treatment of Claustrophobia including:
Self-hypnosis can be taught to address anxiety and to repeat the therapeutic suggestions post session.
Increasing self-confidence and self-esteem.
Post hypnotic suggestions and anchoring help the client to control their breathing, slow their heart, and achieve a relaxed state of mind when faced with the phobic stimulus.
Dissociation may be employed in order either to provide a safe place of relaxation or to negotiate with the ‘part' responsible for the phobic reaction.
Ideo motor responses can be invoked in order to receive permission for change, to create dissociation and to establish change without conscious interference.
Age regression can guide the client back in time and help the client re-examine the event that initially triggered the fear from an objective point of view thus re-establishing control; it can also be employed to access positive feelings such a s self-confidence, calmness and assertiveness.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, (CBT). Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Claustrophobia help you to change the way in which you think, feel and behave. I will help you to challenge your negative beliefs and thoughts which currently fuel and create your current behaviour resulting in Claustrophobia. You will be helped to determine the possibility against what you consider to be a probable outcome. At present it is your negative thoughts and beliefs of a probable outcome, or your thoughts and beliefs about present situations or other peoples actions which produce your Claustrophobia. Once you are able to look at an event or impending event in a new positive way without the interference of dysfunctional sabotaging thoughts then the effects of your Claustrophobia will start to recede and over time they will disperse.
