Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, (CBT) is the preferred method of treatment recommended by the NHS to facilitate change for many issus including; Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Stress, Depression, Fears and Phobias, Anger Issues Weight Loss Stopping smoking

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Therapy
Our 'cognitive processes' are our thoughts which include our ideas, mental images, beliefs and attitudes. Cognitive therapy is based on the principle that certain ways of thinking can trigger, or 'fuel', certain health problems. For example, anxiety, depression, phobias, etc, but there are others including emotional attachments you may have to food and smoking. I help you to understand your current thought patterns. You will learn how your current negative thought patterns affect your current behaviours In particular, to identify any harmful, unhelpful, and 'false' ideas or thoughts which you have that can trigger your current problem, or those negative thoughts that make it worse. The aim is then to help you change your ways of thinking to avoid these ideas.

Behavioural therapy
This aims to change any behaviours that are harmful or not helpful. Various techniques are used. For example, a common unhelpful behaviour is to avoid situations that can make you anxious. In some people with phobias the avoidance can become extreme and affect day-to-day life. Here, a type of behavioural therapy called 'exposure therapy' may be used. This is where you are gradually exposed more and more to feared situations. I will teach you, in the case of anxiety, how to control anxiety and to cope when you face up to feared situations.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
This is a mixture of cognitive and behavioural therapies. They are often combined because how we behave often reflects how we think about certain things or situations. The emphasis on cognitive or behavioural aspects of therapy can vary, depending on the condition being treated. For example, there is often more emphasis on behavioural therapy when treating obsessive compulsive disorder (where repetitive compulsive actions are a main problem). On the other hand, the emphasis may be more on cognitive therapy when treating depression.

What conditions can be helped with CBT?

  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Phobias
  • Panic Attacks/Panic Disorders
  • Depression
  • Anger Issues
  • Weight Loss
  • Stopping Smoking

  • As a rule, the more specific the problem, the more likely CBT may help. This is because it is a practical therapy which focuses on particular problems and aims to overcome them. CBT is sometimes used alone, and sometimes used in addition to other therapies such as hypnotherapy along with the empathic use of counselling skills.

An example of dysfunctional thoughts, beliefs and emotions
for a client suffering with anxiety

    Activating Event
Going out to a party. (Event in the future).

    Dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs
There will be lots of people there and as I wont know many people I will have no one to talk to. I bet people will be looking at me because I will be on my own. It will be awful. I really don't think I can do this. (This client is talking herself into not going out because of what she believes will happen.

    Dysfunctional emotion or consequence
Anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks, resulting in avoidance and in extreme circumstances total avoidance of any social situation.

As you can see from the above example it’s not the event that is causing the anxiety, it’s the thoughts and beliefs attached to the event which is causing it.

I will help you to challenge your negative beliefs to determine the possibility against what you consider to be a probable outcome. With the example above, its the clients thoughts of what she believes will happen at the party which is producing your symptoms of anxiety. once you are able to challenge your negative thinking and create new positive ways of thinking you will be well on your way to solving and fixing your current problems.

How Well Does Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Work?
CBT helps ease the symptoms of various health problems. For example, research studies have shown that a course of CBT is just as effective as medication in treating depression and certain anxiety disorders. There may be long-term benefits of CBT as the techniques to combat these problems can be used for the rest of your life to help to keep symptoms away. So, for example, depression or anxiety are less likely to recur in the future.

What Is The Difference Between Cognitive Behavioural Therapy And Other Talking Treatments?

CBT is one type of psychotherapy ('talking treatment'). Unlike other types of psychotherapy it does not involve 'talking freely', or recalling events in your past to gain insight into your emotional state of mind.

CBT tends to deal with the 'here and now' - how your current thoughts and behaviours are affecting you now. It recognises that events in your past have shaped the way that you currently think and behave. In particular, thought patterns and behaviours learned in childhood, However, the cognitive behavioural therapy part of your treatment does not dwell on the past, but aims to find solutions to how to change your current thoughts and behaviours so that you can function better in the future.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is also different to counselling which is meant to be non-directive, empathic and supportive. Although I of course, offer support and empathy, the therapy has a structure, is problem-focused and practical.

The Hertfordshire Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Clinic is based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire offering a one to one, friendly, informal, understanding and non judgmental approach to therapy, along with the commitment and expertise to help you overcome any problem or difficulty you maybe experiencing.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, unlike other talking therapies, is solution focused and does not dwell on the past.
