Depression is an extremely incapacitating illness which affects not only the sufferer, but also their family, friends, employment, self esteem, and ultimately, restricts the enjoyment of their life.

Many people with go through life with the symptoms without seeking help, believing that it is just 'part of them', but in truth, the illness is very treatable.

People with depression often feel that they are 'alone', whereas in-fact this is far from the case, with as many as one in six people suffering with one form or another of depression at some point in their lives.

How will I be helped with my depression?

You will be helped very effectively with the symptoms of depression you currently experience with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Hypnotherapy and with the use of empathic Counselling Skills.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, (CBT) is the preferred treatment recommended by the NHS to facilitate change. The aims of CBT are to help you change the way that you think, feel and behave.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, unlike other talking therapies, is solution focused and does not dwell on the past. The main stay of CBT is to focus on your thoughts and beliefs (Dysfunctional thoughts and Beliefs) about current events or situations or those which may happen in the future. These beliefs produce the depressive symptoms you currently experience because you can't see a way out of how you currently think, feel and behave.

Below is an example of how dysfunctional thoughts, beliefs and emotions can fuel and exacerbate your current feelings of depression

Activating Event
Marriage Breakdown.

Dysfunctional thoughts or beliefs
I thought my husband loved me, well obviously he didn’t. I don’t want to carry on without him. Life will never be the same now. I don’t want to go out anymore, all I want to do is stay in.

Possible dysfunctional emotion or consequence
Sadness, tearful, depression, isolation. Just wanting to shut the world out and hide.

As you can see from the above example it’s not the event that is causing the feelings, it’s the thoughts and beliefs attached to the event which causes the them. Whatever is causing your depression it can be pretty certain it is your negative thoughts and beliefs that is feeding your symptoms of depression.

I will help you to challenge your negative beliefs to determine the possibility of an outcome against what you consider to be the probable outcome. Once you are able to look at an event or impending event or the situations in your life in a new positive way then your depressive levels will start to decrease.

How else can I be helped with depression?

Hypnotherapy is one of the most validated therapies available today. Recognised by the British Medical Association,(BMA), it is recognized as an orthodox treatment and not merely a complimentary practice.

How will Hypnotherapy help me with my depression?

Hypnotherapy for depression
helps to uncover underlying causes which may be triggering events to your present depression. When you find the symptoms of your depression surfacing, you do not do it deliberately, it is not a conscious action, you don't wake up and think you will be depressed today, generally it's something you experience building up and very often don't understand where it is coming from. Hypnotherapy helps to give the answers to your depression, answers which are not there at a conscious level. Depressive disorders are spontanious subconscious actions which you have created and have now become habit. Depression is a habit, a habit which you have created through life circumstances. Depression is not a medical condition, but very often it is dealt with as if it was, culminating with the over prescription of drugs.

Just as you have created the depression habit, learned to be depressed, equally you will be helped to break this habit and learn to think in a more positive functional way.

Once your subconscious mind is on board to help you learn not to respond to situations with the emotion of depression and once you have learned the new conscious skill of positive thinking processes you will be well on your way to living your life free from the grip of depression. Therapy within hypnosis will go a long way to helping you with the symptoms of your depression and because it deals with the problem at its root...your subconscious, results will be seen very quickly. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will help you to challenge your negative dysfunctional thinking to create new positive functional thoughts. Hypnotherapy will help you to change your subconscious habit of reacting in an anxious way.

All treatments at the Hertfordshire Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Clinic are designed to be solution focused. We do not dwell on the past, the main stay of your treatment deals with how you are going to deal with situations in the future in a more calming and positive way. The treatment provided is rapid and effective.

Hypnotherapy is one of the oldest therapies around and is validated by the British Medical Association,(BMA), as an orthodox treatment and not merely a complimentary practice. Unfortunately, stage shows have given people misconceptions as to what hypnosis is. Some people think that they lose control of their faculties or that they are asleep. Some people think that they will be made to say things they do not want to say. Some people believe that they cannot enter this state of relaxation.

All these misconceptions make people sceptical but are far from what hypnosis is. During the deep relaxed state of hypnosis you are always aware of what is happening, after all, if you weren't how could we converse and work together?! During the hypnotic state you conscious mind is guided into gentle relaxation, but your subconscious mind is in a heightened state of awareness. That is why this form of therapy is so effective because we are able to establish the root of all problems where they are burried...the subconscious mind. Hypnosis is not magical, just as you put your head on the pillow at night and go to sleep naturally, equally by closing your eyes in my consulting room you will be able to enter the calm and relaxed state of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a very safe and effective form of treatment helping to fix problems which are subconscious actions. Hypnotherapy faq's.
